German Smear
German smear mimics the look of irregular stones and heavy mortar joints, a style often found on centuries-old cottages and castles throughout Northern Germany. The technique is akin to whitewashing bricks but instead of using diluted latex paint, our craftsmen coat the brick with a layer of wet mortar. The mortar adds a rough texture, thus creating a rustic and distressed appearance. It also gives the bricks partial coverage, which softens the harsh straight lines that exist in traditional brick siding and creates an irregular pattern. Although traditional German smear involves white mortar over red brick, any combination of brick and mortar colors can be used.
Whitewash
Lighten and brighten surfaces in your living spaces with this painting technique that mutes the dark tones of red or brown brick walls. Rather than reach for the sledgehammer, let us show you how to bring out the best that your existing walls have to offer. While painting over brick with 100 percent latex paint will give the brick a solid, opaque color, whitewashing mutes the brick’s natural color with a translucent finish. The technique preserves the bricks’ natural, random variations, depending on how much paint is applied and how each individual brick absorbs it.
